Joanna Chapman-smith (CAN)
folk/singersongwriter/gypsy/jazz (duo*)
Joanna Chapman-Smith has music running through her veins. She grew up in a musical family that has its roots in New Zealand, Italy and Brazil and her songs are as eclectic as her upbringing. Joanna's style cuts across genre boundaries blending old style Eastern European folk with jazzy vocals and playful guitar work.
On stage, Joanna is a dynamic and engaging performer. Her quirky sense of humour and feisty personality draw people in. She is a multi-instrumentalist with a stunning voice that would melt the hardest of hearts: her song ' Melodies' won the IMA (Independent Music Award) for best acoustic song of 2010!
But still her talent doesnt end right there: Chapman-Smith has also composed music for the National Ballet of Canada, written theater pieces and taught Gamalan and Brasilian drums. Besides playing in all sorts of venues and theatres she still likes to play on the streets so don't be surprised to see this incredible talent just around the corner of your block as well!
Amongst her biggest inspirations are strong women like An Brun, Regina Spektor, Tracy Chapman, Ani difranco and Hanne Hukkelberg and she also likes to tour with other female singers. In october 2009 Joanna set her first steps on European stages while touring with singer and banjoplayer Tamara Nile as her support act and gave concerts in Holland, Belgium, Germany and France. In 2010 she returned with the lovely female standup bass player Rosa Smedley.
In 2011 she returned with British multi-instrumentalist Mat Martin and this turned out so well that the two of them has decided to come back in april 2012 with a new EP.
A full new and very promising cd also to be released end of 2012 is ready and we hardly can't wait to present this to Europe. This cd will be officially released trough a label in Europe and the European cd release tour will be held early spring 2013 with a full band.
Options can now already be made on this 2013 tour as well!!
